Art Therapy Consultation & Assessment

“Danielle’s use of art assessment in family therapy really helps to bring out the unconscious patterns and dynamics that families engage in. As a therapist, it has also helped to gain a better understanding of the family quickly.”

-Stephanie, LMFT

Image-making reveals content that is unconscious or beyond words, allowing invisible things to be made visible.

If the individual, couple, or family you are working with is struggling to apply skills or insights made in therapy, art therapy may be a good option.

When you collaborate with me, we will discuss a brief history of your client and where they are stuck. Based on this conversation I will identify if they are in need of an art-based assessment or a targeted intervention. Assessments can be helpful for understanding more about individuals, couples, and families.

Assessments

If you are unsure where the stuck point is, assessment may be a good option. Art therapy assessments I offer are not used for diagnostic purposes, but for revealing internal nonverbal phenomena. Assessments I provide can assist with revealing aspects of how a client sees themselves, their past, or their family. Family dynamics assessments can also reveal family system structures that may otherwise take several sessions or a conflict to reveal.

Art-based Assessments I provide are:

  • House Tree Person

  • Family-Centered Circle Drawing

  • Kinetic Family Drawing

  • Bridge Drawing

  • Langarten Joint Family Drawing Series

Targeted Interventions

If you believe your client is struggling to fully understand or apply concepts, or is struggling to connect to their emotions, single-session art interventions may be helpful.

After discussing the goals for the session, I will use the Expressive Therapies Continuum, a neuroscience based system for intervention design, to create a specialized process oriented to your client’s needs.

Different materials and directives can influence cognitive and emotional processes, allowing for experiential change that can then be applied outside of art making. If you are more interested in understanding how and why art therapy can be so effective, click here to learn more.
