General Questions

  • Art therapy integrates art making with a therapeutic relationship to enhance physical, mental, relational, and spiritual well-being.

It encompasses a broad range of practices across various settings, including private practice, schools, medical facilities, and prisons, and is often combined with therapeutic models.

Art therapy works in part by transforming internal experiences into external forms through art, which helps individuals access and heal deeper parts of themselves. Art therapy can also be used in group therapy where individuals can witness one another’s art, practicing empathy and developing a sense of being known and appreciated in community. In some cases, individuals can even collaborate on a shared artwork, revealing unspoken group dynamics and facilitating deeper relational healing.

Art therapy processes can also assist in activating the parasympathetic nervous system which works to alleviate physical pain, stress, and anxiety.

By using intentional creative processes and materials, trained art therapists help individuals achieve therapeutic goals, making art an accessible and powerful tool for healing and self-discovery.

  • While there are many art therapy directives that you can do on your own, there are many unique benefits to making art in this setting. First, I am an art therapist with over 9 years of training and experience in art, psychology, mental health counseling and art therapy. You can count on me to carefully select and construct research and neuroscience-based processes each week that meet specific goals. These goals all serve to effectively increase creativity, self-awareness, and psychological wellness.

Furthermore, the group setting increases feelings of connectedness and allows for individuals to both support and feel supported by one another. As you attend more and more groups, you will grow in your skills to express your internal experiences to others, and provide insight and empathy.
